- Substance Beats Style: Why Beginning Students Fail to Code with LLMs Although LLMs are increasing the productivity of professional programmers, existing work shows that beginners struggle to prompt LLMs to solve text-to-code tasks. Why is this the case? This paper explores two competing hypotheses about the cause of student-LLM miscommunication: (1) students simply lack the technical vocabulary needed to write good prompts, and (2) students do not understand the extent of information that LLMs need to solve code generation tasks. We study (1) with a causal intervention experiment on technical vocabulary and (2) by analyzing graphs that abstract how students edit prompts and the different failures that they encounter. We find that substance beats style: a poor grasp of technical vocabulary is merely correlated with prompt failure; that the information content of prompts predicts success; that students get stuck making trivial edits; and more. - Bridging Dictionary: AI-Generated Dictionary of Partisan Language Use Words often carry different meanings for people from diverse backgrounds. Today's era of social polarization demands that we choose words carefully to prevent miscommunication, especially in political communication and journalism. To address this issue, we introduce the Bridging Dictionary, an interactive tool designed to illuminate how words are perceived by people with different political views. The Bridging Dictionary includes a static, printable document featuring 796 terms with summaries generated by a large language model. These summaries highlight how the terms are used distinctively by Republicans and Democrats. Additionally, the Bridging Dictionary offers an interactive interface that lets users explore selected words, visualizing their frequency, sentiment, summaries, and examples across political divides. We present a use case for journalists and emphasize the importance of human agency and trust in further enhancing this tool. 1 Speech Recognition for Analysis of Police Radio Communication Police departments around the world use two-way radio for coordination. These broadcast police communications (BPC) are a unique source of information about everyday police activity and emergency response. Yet BPC are not transcribed, and their naturalistic audio properties make automatic transcription challenging. We collect a corpus of roughly 62,000 manually transcribed radio transmissions (~46 hours of audio) to evaluate the feasibility of automatic speech recognition (ASR) using modern recognition models. We evaluate the performance of off-the-shelf speech recognizers, models fine-tuned on BPC data, and customized end-to-end models. We find that both human and machine transcription is challenging in this domain. Large off-the-shelf ASR models perform poorly, but fine-tuned models can reach the approximate range of human performance. Our work suggests directions for future work, including analysis of short utterances and potential miscommunication in police radio interactions. 2 OnGoal: Tracking and Visualizing Conversational Goals in Multi-Turn Dialogue with Large Language Models As multi-turn dialogues with large language models (LLMs) grow longer and more complex, how can users better evaluate and review progress on their conversational goals? We present OnGoal, an LLM chat interface that helps users better manage goal progress. OnGoal provides real-time feedback on goal alignment through LLM-assisted evaluation, explanations for evaluation results with examples, and overviews of goal progression over time, enabling users to navigate complex dialogues more effectively. Through a study with 20 participants on a writing task, we evaluate OnGoal against a baseline chat interface without goal tracking. Using OnGoal, participants spent less time and effort to achieve their goals while exploring new prompting strategies to overcome miscommunication, suggesting tracking and visualizing goals can enhance engagement and resilience in LLM dialogues. Our findings inspired design implications for future LLM chat interfaces that improve goal communication, reduce cognitive load, enhance interactivity, and enable feedback to improve LLM performance. 4 authors · Aug 28 2
